James Arthur Williams,best known as Jim Williams (December 11, 1930 – January 14, 1990) was a figure typically known “folk” in the city of Savannah in United States. Of humble origin, carved a quick fortune in real estate and art world. Reached international notoriety when he was caught in a crime that led to the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.
From humble Macon family (his mother, Blanche Williams, was secretary), carving his future after a lucky break with the world of the ancient ages . His great passion was the restoration of old houses of Old Savannah, then (full season of 60), a mixture of houses on the brink of ruin. Collector of old age curious as Nazi flags, than the mere kept for historical interest, or countless Faberg objects, amassed a huge fortune that placed him directly between the richest and most prestigious men not only of Georgia but of United States.
For many years he was famous for its opulent feasts that celebrated every year at Christmas, even many of them were covered by journalists. His residence was in Mercer House in Savannah, in a privileged place among large mansions and lush gardens, where they had lived their own Johnny Mercer, composer of most of the songs of Frank Sinatra.
In 1981 came his social ruin when shooting, even in circumstances that remain unclear, his lover and assistant to the restoration workshop of Danny Hansford, after several trials full of scandals, inconclusive evidence and witnesses, he was released after spending some time in jail , from where they continued to maintain a presence in every luxury.
Jim Williams died in 1990 due to pneumonia, and reportedly also by a failure in the heart.
He was forever immortalized by the novelist John Berendt, who portrait, with all its strengths, weaknesses and poses, in the travel book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, years later, in 1997, actor Kevin Spacey understand it to perfection in the film of the same title, directed by Clint Eastwood.
